OUR PROGRAMS

FILTER SPACE

EXHIBITIONS

Each year, Filter Photo presents eight to ten exhibitions at Filter Space, our gallery located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. We focus on supporting emerging to mid-career photo-based artists whose compelling  projects reflect the breadth of contemporary photography. Filter provides exhibiting artists with a stipend and production support, creating meaningful opportunities to realize ambitious new work.

PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIES CLUB

A free workshop led by curator and educator, Kristie Kahns. Each session centers on a curated selection of photo books and shared readings drawn from recent and foundational scholarship, offering a space to collectively explore urgent and provocative questions shaping contemporary photography. Each month is structured around a specific theme, ranging from Photography and the Black Arts Movement to Indigenous visual artists and the photographic archive.

CONVERSATION AND CRITIQUE

An ongoing partnership with Artists in Public Schools supports Conversation and Critique, a bi-monthly, public program in which current APS artists-in-residence invite the broader Chicago photography community to gather for dialogue and feedback. During these sessions, artists share works-in-progress developed through their residencies in Chicago Public Schools, fostering exchange, experimentation, and community engagement.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEBINAR SERIES

A biannual, four-part professional development webinar series designed to support emerging artists and creatives. Developed in collaboration with established artists, curators, and industry professionals, the series provides practical guidance on building and sustaining an arts practice. Each live webinar will include practical examples and advice for moving your career forward.

STUDIO TIME WITH KELLI CONNELL

Open to artists at all stages of their careers, this online workshop incorporates goal setting, writing prompts, facilitated sharing, and sustained studio time to foster productive and sustainable creative habits. Participants meet for two hours per day, four days per week, over three weeks (12 sessions total), leaving the program with advanced projects, clearer goals, and a strengthened sense of community and accountability.

BUTZLAFF FAMILY FELLOWSHIP

Open to emerging and early-career artists and arts administrators, the Filter Photo Fellowship offers a unique, experiential opportunity to work collaboratively with an established, non-profit arts organization. It is designed to foster the professional development of an artist or arts administrator seeking to better understand and develop skills in the workings of a small non-profit. This Fellowship is generously supported by The Kathryn and Stephen H. Butzlaff Family Fund.

CURATORIAL RESIDENCY

Filter Photo’s inaugural Curatorial Residency is a three-month program designed to support emerging curators. The residency provides a dedicated workspace, access to our studio layout and project development space, and a $2,500 stipend. The program will culminate in a two-month exhibition at Filter Space, offering the resident an opportunity to realize a fully developed curatorial project with support from Filter's staff and mentorship community.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The key offering of the annual Filter Photo Festival is the portfolio reviews, which provides a generative space for artists of diverse backgrounds and career experiences to exchange feedback with leaders in the field including curators, gallery directors, publishers, and others. These individual meetings often directly lead to tangible career advancement and forge mutually supportive relationships between artists and art workers for years to come. Each year, we are joined by approximately 20–25 reviewers, and host over 700 total reviews. The festival model democratizes access to leaders in the industry in ways that the larger art world often does not—giving emerging artists direct access to share their work in a one-on-one setting.

FILTER PHOTO FESTIVAL

Filter Photo’s other primary programmatic output is the annual Filter Photo Festival, a national convening in Chicago featuring career-building initiatives to support and educate any artists engaged with photography. Unlike a traditional Festival model, the majority of the programming is free and open to the public.

Filter Photo Festival is a multi-day celebration of photography that takes place every September in Chicago. The 18th annual Festival will be held September 23rd - 26th at the Columbia College Chicago Student Center, centrally located downtown in proximity to museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions.

Programming includes portfolio reviews, workshops, lectures, and artist talks. Additionally, exhibitions will be hosted at Filter Space gallery in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood.

Portfolio reviews are a central element of the Festival. During a portfolio review, an artist is able to share work directly with local, national, and international photography professionals, including gallery directors, curators, editors, and publishers.

An important part of the Chicago arts community since 2009, Filter Photo Festival has hosted an impressive roster of established artists and photographers as Festival Keynote Speaker including Catherine Opie, Liz Deschenes, Penelope Umbrico, Carrie Mae Weems, Mona Kuhn, John Chiara, and Rodrigo Valenzuela, among others.
