In conjunction with the 2026 Filter Photo Festival, join us for a reception at the Chicago Cultural Center to view their current exhibition The Big Picture by the Midwest Large Format Asylum.
The Big Picture features work by over 40 artists and celebrates the enduring vitality of large format photography, from historic view camera traditions to contemporary artistic practice. Featuring photographers from Chicago and the greater Midwest, the show spans abstraction, landscape, portraiture, still life, and beyond, highlighting the many ways artists continue to use large format photography as a slow, intentional, and deeply material form.
Through hand-made photographic processes, these works produce tangible images shaped by light, material, time, and the hand of the maker. At a moment when digital technologies and AI increasingly shape image-making, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the continued relevance of photographic craft, attention, and physical process.
