THE MUSE AT WORK
Muse n. 1. any of the nine sister goddesses in Greek mythology presiding over song and poetry and the arts and sciences. 2. a source of inspiration; esp. a guiding genius.
When an artist makes a connection with that inner voice he/she knows that the “muse” is at work. I have exchanged ideas about this phenomenon with many artists and all acknowledge that this experience is real and is at the heart of artistic intuition. It is beyond words, but it is universally felt among creatives.
My “muse” is that inner feeling of connection when capturing images with a camera. It has forever changed the way I approach photography. The camera is merely a tool to be used for exploration of the world and to express a unique connection with a subject. My goal is to produce images that prompt the viewer to stop and pause to see whether they might engage in a communication with the image. These images are ones that resulted from being present to the stillness of the “muse.”
