THE EVOLVING LANDSCAPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY PUBLISHING WITH MICHAEL ITKOFF

headshot_euro_mike-11-2.jpg

Part of our Professional Development series, this workshop facilitated by Michael Itkoff of Daylight Books educates photographers about the medium of the photo book as a way to disseminate and exhibit their photographic projects. Participants are asked to bring their printed photography projects and any project elements to the workshop where Michael and the group will assist in editing, sequencing, and preparing the project for presentation to publishers and/or for self-publishing.

Designed for both students and professionals keen to make their project into a photography book, projects can be of any nature, personal, thematic, documentary etc.  The main goal of the workshop is an edited and sequenced portfolio of images ready to present to publishers.  Participants will gain great insight into the world of photography book publishing in general.

Michael Itkoff is an artist and Cofounder of both Fabl and Daylight Books, a non-profit organization dedicated to publishing art and photography books.  For over a decade, Daylight has been dedicated to publishing art and photography via its print and digital publishing programs. By exploring the documentary mode along with the more conceptual concerns of fine-art, Daylight’s uniquely collectible publications work to revitalize the relationship between art, photography, and the world-at-large.

Itkoff has been deeply involved in the publishing industry in both print and digital media and he has written for the NYTimes Lens blog, Art Asia Pacific, Nueva Luz, Conscientious blog and the Forward. Before starting Daylight, Michael interned at the Annie Leibovitz Studio and Aperture Foundation among others and worked at Rizzoli International Publications.  His monograph, Street Portraits, was published by Charta Editions in 2009. He received his BA from Sarah Lawrence College and his MFA from ICP/Bard College.

Since 2003, Daylight has engaged in innovative photographic publishing and community art projects by re-imagining the documentary mode. Through collaboration with established and emerging artists, scholars, and journalists, Daylight has become one of the premier showcases for contemporary photography.
