The Hereditary Estate
Daniel Coburn
Filter Photo is pleased to present The Hereditary Estate, a solo exhibition of work by Daniel Coburn.
"My family history is haunted by instances of suicide, severe domestic violence, and substance abuse. Frustrated by the lack of images in my own family archive to document this series of tragedies, I set out to create a more potent and accurate supplement to the family album assembled by my parents. Using photographs made over the last decade, and altered, amateur photographs, I weave a family narrative that is simultaneously beautiful and terrifying. The people and landscapes that appear in these photographs become metaphors and symbols for a family that exists at the intersection of domestic duress and spirituality." —Daniel W. Coburn
Daniel Coburn’s first monograph, The Hereditary Estate, was published by Kehrer-Verlag in Spring, 2015. The careful sequencing of images, curated in book form, creates a powerful psychological dialogue designed to inspire an emotional and visceral response from the viewer. The international distribution of this book completes an essential conceptual component of this work, placing this supplementary album into family collections in countries all over the world.
