Filter Photo is pleased to announce Context 2019, our annual spring open call for lens-based work. This year the exhibition was juried by Ariel Pate, Assistant Curator of Photography, Milwaukee Art Museum.

Juror Ariel Pate says, “It was an honor to select work to be included Context 2019. The wide variety of practices and work to choose from speaks to the appeal and breadth of the medium of photography. The works chosen primarily reflect two storied themes of art history: portraiture and landscape. However, the photographers selected have expanded these genres to reflect on our contemporary context, one in which barely concealed intolerance and anti-scientific thought such as climate change denial are everyday facts of public discourse. Together, these issues determine not only the conditions we live in now but also the future that awaits us. Through their engagement with these themes, these photographers have examined our present moment, working to complicate and examine prejudice and the future of our environment. Not only that, but they have done it with technical skill and visual appeal. Thank you to all the artists who submitted work—the professionalism and level of engagement with photography is a tribute to Filter Photo’s efforts to promote and support photography within Chicago and our region”.
