PORTFOLIO REVIEWS F.A.Q.
Portfolio Reviews are sold in blocks of 5 or 8 reviews and will be filled on a first come, first served basis based on your date of registration. After registering for your reviews, you will be contacted to rank your reviewers in order of preference to ensure that each participant is scheduled with whom they are most interested in seeing.
Reviewer preferences are due by August 1st.
What happens after I register?
You will be contacted by a Filter Photo representative within a few days after you register for your reviews. You will be asked to submit your reviewer preferences in order from 1-12, 1 being who you would like to see the most. Reviewer preferences are due by August 1st. The date you register holds your place in line and priority is given to those who register early. Schedules will be released by late August / early September.
How do I present my portfolio?
The best way to present your work is loose prints inside a clamshell portfolio box. Time is valuable while being reviewed and you want to be sure you can easily access each print and have the ability to edit as your review is being conducted.
How many images are in a portfolio and what size should they be?
A typical portfolio is comprised of tightly edited images in a project or series of 15-20 prints. Take into consideration what the final print size would be for exhibiting and if it is easy to carry and handle. You will be given a standard 6ft table to present your work to the reviewer and most people show prints between 11 x 14 to 20 x 24 inches.
How should I best prepare for my review?
The best way to have the most success with your reviews is to practice and research. Be sure you are meeting with a reviewer who is interested in your work. A good way to ensure this is to read his or her bio, found on our reviewers’ page, and research what type of work they generally exhibit or publish. By practicing your presentation beforehand you can make the most of your 20-minute review. Be sure to allow enough time for the reviewer to critique and give advice.
What should I bring?
Will I be required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing at the Festival?
Filter Photo Festival will be following all city, state, and CDC guidelines in regards to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. As these guidelines are updated, we will update our protocols. Based on the City of Chicago's reopening guidelines, it is estimated the city will be in Phase 5, fully reopened, by the start of the Festival in September. Masks may still be required in group situations and at all Festival events regardless of vaccine status. We will update attendees closer to the start of the Festival.
